Case Study -Our Future Coast

Case Study : Our Future Coast

Location : Fylde Dunes

Overview
The Our Future Coast programme is trialling innovative, nature-based techniques to support dune formation and strengthen coastal resilience. One such approach involves the use of temporary banners designed to influence the movement of wind-blown sand.

Trial Location and Approach
The trial is currently underway at Fylde dunes and is testing how effectively banners can interrupt wind flow and encourage sand to settle nearby. By slowing wind speeds, the banners help promote the natural deposition of sand, supporting the build-up and stabilisation of dune ridges.

Benefits for Coastal Protection and Nature
This process strengthens coastal defences by reducing erosion and improving resilience to storm surges. At the same time, it creates favourable conditions for dune vegetation to establish, providing valuable habitat for wildlife and supporting biodiversity and nature recovery.

Challenges and Adaptation

Durability has been identified as a key challenge. The banners did not withstand the harsh coastal conditions for extended periods and became detached. In response, alternative materials and banner sizes are being explored. The simple design — mounted on a small number of posts — allows banners to be easily removed and replaced, supporting an adaptive approach as the trial develops.

A Nature-Based Solution

By combining practical coastal protection with ecological enhancement, this approach demonstrates how nature-based solutions can deliver multiple benefits for people, wildlife and the local economy.
